Frame overlays for:

  • Action Safe

  • Title Safe

  • Center Cross

  • Rule of Thirds

  • Golden Ratio

  • Grid


These should be check box controls, NOT mutually exclusive, so that Center Cross can be enabled with Grid, for example. These should be non-printing, non-exporting drawing aids. (Like Ghost Ink 😉)

And perhaps a color or 0-100% opacity slider.

Note: Action safe: 97%, Title Safe 90%. The grid should be a 6×6 proportional grid (useful for people like me who still remember field charts). For Golden Ratio, φ = 1.618, so 1/φ = 0.618 and the complement is 0.382. The divisions sit at 38.2% and 61.8% of each dimension, measured from either edge — symmetrical, so it doesn't matter which side you measure from.

    Two very minor complaints regarding the OVERLAYS feature, which is otherwise great:

    1. Center cross markings should not scale with the frame. If I am using a scope aspect ratio, for example, the center cross and side “ticks” spread out horizontally so they extend over nearly the entire frame. Instead, these should definitely remain the same size/proportions regardless of aspect ratio. Center cross markings should also be smaller — I made my example so that it could be read at postage stamp size, but I don’t think anyone will be drawing so small. I think ideally the center cross bars should be no longer than the horizontal and vertical ticks.

    2. The overlay markings are way too dark/dense. They should render at 10-15%, thus noticeably lighter than the appearance of default “LIGHT” pen. At their current darkness/density, they are obtrusive.

      1. Good call, already fixed.

      2. Makes sense. The default is now much lighter, about 15% grey on white as suggested, and we're adding opacity presets so everyone can pick their own.

      Both in the next update.
