SETTINGS > FRAMES PER ROW > 1

It would be nice, in the Board View, if we could view and edit frames in a 1-frame-wide row. For me anyway, this is less about the size of the drawing (I can use Focus View for drawing at larger size) than about seeing and working on scenes as a strip rather than as a grid.

Context: In Japan we are so used to seeing the storyboard as a vertical timeline of images, that having to scan horizontally and then return to the left every 3, 4, or 5, frames is very distracting. Even live-action folks here work in a vertical format. I believe this reflects the Japanese way of writing from top to bottom — of course, traditional Japanese calligraphy is vertical, but even modern prose, newspapers, and official documents are written vertically (pretty much everything but the headlines, captions, and ingredients on food packages, which tend to be horizontal). And for what it’s worth, foreigners working in the system here seem to appreciate how this vertical format applies to storyboards in particular.

Anyway, it would seem a fairly low-calorie modification to allow for a 1-row-wide display in board view. Please consider! 🙏

A mixture of Japanese live action and anime storyboards—samples from Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero, Juzo Itami’s The Funeral, Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro, a segment from Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s episode in The Animatrix, and my film Tekkonkinkreet
